THE Ministry of Religious Affairs awarded trophies, certificates of appreciation and cash to 45 pupils under the Khatam Al-Quran Incentive Scheme for students who have completed all 30 juz (chapters) of the Quran before reaching the age of 10 yesterday.
Islamic Studies Department Acting Director Hjh Rusita Hj Yahya said there were 166 pupils participating in the scheme, but only 45 of them were selected for the final of the Quran Tasmik Round early this year.
Five pupils from various religious schools in the Sultanate were awarded trophies, certificates and $1,000 each, she said.
Ahmad Huzaifah Hj Hasbi, from the Lambak Kanan Dato Basir Religious School, bagged first place in the overall result of the scheme by achieving a 93.5 per cent result.
Md Izzat Darwish Mursidi from the Pengiran Anak Puteri Hjh Masna Lambak Kanan Religious School and Md Wafii Syafiq Hj Mosliadi from Lambak Kiri Dato Othman Religious School won second and third respectively.
The fourth and fifth places were awarded to Md Jihadul Haq Najhe of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Religious School and Md Abdul Haiman Toneey from Pengiran Anak Puteri Azimah Nikmatul Bolkiah Religious School.
Hjh Rusita said three judges from the department selected the winners from various religious and Arabic schools across the Sultanate based on articulation, voice and application of the rules of recitations.
The recipients received their awards from the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar, at the Royal Brunei Recreational Club, Brunei International Airport, yesterday.
Pg Dato Hj Bahrom said the objective of the annual scheme was to encourage more youth to read Quran verses with the correct pronunciation and articulation.
“This annual scheme has been going on for 24 years… I hope this scheme would be an incentive for more young people to know the benefits of reading the Quran perfectly,” he said.
