YANG Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Hajah Taiyibah Qalbul Bolqiah, the daughter of His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, consented yesterday to attend the prize presentation for the Under 10 Khatam Al-Quran Incentive Scheme for Religious and Arabic School Pupils.
Also present was her husband, Pengiran Haji Mohammad Hakimmuddin bin Pengiran Haji Hashim and their son Pengiran Wajeeh Al-Bolkiah bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad Hakimmuddin.
Among the prize recipients was their daughter, Pengiran Qaiyimah Nurul Bolkiah binti Pengiran Haji Mohammad Hakimmuddin, who represented the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Religious School, Brunei I.
The prize presentation was carried out by the guest of honour, Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, the Minister of Religious Affairs.
The ceremony was held at the hall of the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB).
In her welcoming speech, Ustazah Hajah Rusita binti Haji Yahya, the Acting Director of Islamic Studies under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, stated that from 1991 to 2015, the scheme has produced 1,043 pupils who completed their Al-Quran reading before the age of 10.
“The Islamic Studies Department will continue to work and cooperate with parents and the community from time to time, to uphold the wish of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, for the nation to be Al-Quran literate, and to realise the aspirations for Brunei Darussalam to be a Zikir Nation,” she said.
Two hundred and eighty pupils registered for the semi-finals, with 48 proceeding to the national finals. The Brunei I area of the Brunei-Muara District recorded 18 participants in the finals, which is the highest number for all four districts.
The scheme is designed to motivate children to complete 30 Juzuks before the age of 10, and to instil the reading of Al-Quran as a lifelong habit.
