MoRA to introduce new Al-Quran learning system

 Hakim Hayat

THE Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) will be introducing a new Al-Quran learning system for nationwide religious schools by 2017, which will enable pupils below the age of 10 to complete their reading of Al-Quran, said the Minister of Religious Affairs yesterday.
Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman said religious school pupils under the age of 10 years should be capable of completing their Al-Quran studies, since a scheme devised over two decades ago prove that many can excel in it.
He made the remarks yesterday during his speech at an awards ceremony for the Under 10 Khatam Al-Quran Incentive Scheme for Religious and Arabic School Pupils, where 48 children who successfully completed the programme were finalists.
The scheme, introduced in 1991, has seen over 1,000 individuals completing the programme since its inception, and is judged based on several criteria focusing on the correct method and other aspects of Al-Quran reading.
The minister said 280 religious school pupils registered for the scheme this year, which promises monetary rewards upon successful completion of reading 30 Juzuks of the Al-Quran but from that number, 186 made it through the initial screening, and only 48 made it to the final round.

The minister added that based on the encouraging number of religious school pupils who have completed the scheme, and with the scheme’s evaluation methods in line with current Al-Quran education for Religious Preschool until Primary 2, it should be an “ideal” system for the pupils who are only currently learning basic Al-Quran reading in the early years of religious school.
“I think we should give this matter immediate attention. The existing scheme is valuable, but in ensuring the precision and alignment of Al-Quran education, it should correspond with current learning phase and capabilities of pupils,” the minister added.
He went on to say that this is in line with the ministry’s new approach in Al-Quran learning in religious schools, in ensuring that future generations are equipped with Al-Quran reading capabilities in all aspects, including the correct way of reciting and understanding its contents.
The event was held at the Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) yesterday.
